Tert-Butanol (CH3)3COH has a camphor-like smell and is a white, crystalline solid or colorless liquid (above 77 °F) (IPCS, 1987a; NIOSH, 2005). It is miscible with ether, alcohol, and other organic solvents and soluble in water (IPCS, 1987a). It is extremely flammable and readily ignited by heat, sparks, or flames; when combined with air, vapors can create explosive combinations. Contact with strong hydrochloric acid, powerful mineral acids, or oxidizing substances might cause fire and explosion (NIOSH, 1992).
Tert-Butanol has also been employed as a solvent and dehydrator, among other use cases. Tert-butanol is a polar organic solvent that finds extensive use in the production of paint removers, tastes, and fragrances. Additionally, it is used to denaturize ethyl alcohol.
A byproduct of the gasoline additive methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is tert-butanol.Additionally, flotation devices and methyl methacrylate plastics are made with tert-butanol. Due to its camphor-like scent, it is also used to make artificial musk, fruit essences, and perfume, among other applications in the food and cosmetic industries (HSDB, 2007). It is utilized in industrial cleaning solutions, coatings for metal and paperboard food containers (Cal/EPA, 1999), and chemical extraction for usage in pharmaceutical applications (HSDB, 2007).
Tert-Butanol is a chemical intermediate used in the production of methyl methacrylate, flotation agents, fruit essences, and perfumes. It can also be used as a solvent (for example, paints, lacquers, and varnishes), a denaturant for ethanol and several other alcohols, an octane booster in gasoline, a dehydrator, and a chemical intermediate for methyl methacrylate.
