This product is the dried root of the Panax quinquefolium L. plant of the Panaxaceae family. It is all cultivated, harvested in autumn, washed, and then dried in the sun or by low-temperature drying. [Properties] This product is spindle-shaped, cylindrical or conical in shape, with a length of 3 to 12 cm and a diameter of 0.8 to 2 cm. The surface is light brownish yellow or yellow white, with transverse rings and linear pitted protrusions, as well as fine shallow longitudinal wrinkles and root remnants. The main root has one to several lateral roots in the middle and lower part, most of which have broken. Some have a root head (rhizome) at the top (with distinct segments), with a circular or semi-circular stem scar (rhizome socket) and unifoliate roots (tuber) or have broken. It is heavy, with a firm texture, not easily broken, and the cross-section is flat, light yellowish white, slightly showing a powdery texture, with yellowish brown point-like resin ducts in the cortex, brownish yellow ring patterns of the cambium, and slightly radial texture of the wood. It has a faint and distinctive odor and a slightly bitter and sweet taste.
